Arctic Ocean Sea Ice Area Extent 2014

For September 2014 the Arctic Ocean sea ice area extent minimum was reached on 16 September. The value came in at 4.98 million square kilometers. This year's value compares to the previous year minimum reached on 13 September 2013 of 5.07 million square kilometers. The current 'all-time' minimum of the satellite-observation era occurred on 16 September 2012 at a value of 3.37 million square kilometers. Data for the analysis comes from the NASA-Team algorithm daily values at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado. More information on the satellite-observation era variability of sea ice area extent can be found in R.R. Muskett, Non-stationary Drivers of Polar Sea Ice Area, Natural Science, 3 (5), pp. 351-368, 2011. doi:10.4236/ns.2011.35047.
