NGEE Barrow B


A subsurface soil monitoring station located at the NGEE Arctic intensive site B near Barrow, Alaska. Site B features high-centered polygons. Two data products are generated: (1) soil profile temperature measurements and (2) active layer and permafrost temperature, as well as moisture measurements from instrumented soil pits. Subsurface temperature data are collected hourly along transects  that cross center, edge, rim , and trough topographic features of the polygons. Each transect  has five 1.5 m vertical array thermistor probes (VATP) with 16 thermistors. The site  has two soil pits with sensors monitoring active layer and permafrost temperatures, soil moisture, thermal conductivity, and heat flux. There is also a 3 meter borehole with a vertical array thermistor probes (VATP) with 5 thermistors each. These data are collected to better understand the thermal dynamics of the active layer and permafrost. Additionally, this information serves as calibration and evaluation data for fine-scale simulations of polygons.
